ABOUT OUR TEAM LEADER:
Hi, my name is Allison Heinekamp, I am wife to my absolute best friend and mother of 4 great kiddos. My love for missions started when I went on my first mission trip after my senior year of high school. I traveled to Juarez, Mexico where I helped build two homes and loved on the families there. Years later I finally made it on another trip and traveled to Haiti in November of 2013. This time God whispered to my heart that it was time for our family to take action and put our adoption account to good use, we had been saving for years as we knew adoption would be part of our story after having our first child. We applied in January of 2014 with America World to grow our family through the miracle adoption. Life took us on some twists and turns where we finally ended up in the China program after years of being on the wait list with another country. So my next international travel experience happened in February of 2017 when we traveled to China for two weeks to bring our beautiful 3-year-old son home. I believe that traveling the world and loving on God’s people, bringing their stories home with us is never time wasted and I am excited to see what God has in store next!
HAITI MISSION TRIP BACKGROUND:
Haiti is a beautiful, mountainous Caribbean country with a tropical climate that occupies the western third of the island of Hispaniola, which it shares with the Dominican Republic. While previously a French colony, Haiti declared its independence in 1804 as the first black republic. The country of Haiti is slightly smaller than the state of Maryland with a population of approximately 9.5 million people. Haiti was once one of the wealthiest colonies in the Caribbean largely based on its forestry and sugar-related industries. Due to deforestation, erosion, political unrest and natural disasters, Haiti is currently the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, with approximately 80% of the population living under the poverty line and more than 50% of them living in extreme poverty.
The people of Haiti are vibrant, hopeful people with a rich heritage. Children typically enter orphanages/creches in Haiti because of poverty, parental abandonment, and neglect. One Orphan Mission teams work alongside orphanages to both interact & nurture the children and assist with any projects that are needed.
