Uganda is An East African country bordered by South Sudan, DRC, Rwanda, Tanzania and Kenya, Uganda is often associated with violence, abject poverty, child soldiers, and widespread communicable diseases. According to the 2012 UNICEF in Uganda report, the country is, however, experiencing growth in development – “The under-five mortality rate is dropping steadily, families are rising above the poverty line, and the economy is growing.” With a population over 33 million, half of Ugandan’s are under the age of 18 and 1.2 million are estimated to be orphaned by AIDS alone. Less than half of the child population is protected from malaria and Uganda continues to be ranked as one of the 30 countries in the world with the highest death rate of children under 5 years of age.

STORYTELLER mission teams will be working to combat these statistics, visiting our orphanage and ministry partners in the country.

With a population of over 91 million people, there is an assorted collection of food, languages, customs and people groups. Ethiopia also contains a diverse landscape, including parts of the Nile River and the Great Rift Valley. As an East African landlocked country, Ethiopia is bordered by Somalia, Kenya, Sudan, Eritrea and Djibouti.

Ethiopia, an ancient Christian nation, has deep-rooted Ethiopian Orthodox customs and practices. The Judaic-Christian roots of Ethiopia can be found in both the Hebrew and Christian scriptures. Today, about half the population of Ethiopia is Christian.

Ethiopia is a country that is about twice the size of Texas has an estimated 4.3 million orphans. The children are primarily orphaned due to poverty, and live in both government-run and privately established orphanages. The need is great in Ethiopia. There are many, many children in need of families, however many of them will not get the opportunity to be adopted because they are not documented for international adoption.

America World  partners with many orphanages in Ethiopia. It is at these orphanage that our Storyteller teams visit and work to help provide education, resources and support for the on-going care provided by the orphanage staff.

We are very excited about this trip and the opportunities to serve with our amazing partners in both Uganda and Ethiopia. We will be taking two of our daughters with us for this trip. Kassidy will be a sophomore at The University of Akron and Klaire will be entering the sixth grade. This is a great opportunity for anyone who would like to learn more about our partnerships in these countries and the impact that America World and One Orphan is having on children and families. I know your life will be forever changed as you join us in this incredible journey of living out James 1:27.
