What Not To Say To An Adoptive Family
Adoptive mom Kim recently took a series of photos of her two daughters holding signs with actual comments they've received written on them. The comments are ignorant and hurtful- some shockingly so. She has decided to use these comments, and this project, as a learning opportunity:
I have tried to explain to my daughters that people do not say these things to be mean, they say them out of ignorance, which is why I am sharing some of them. Words are powerful, they can become tools or weapons, choose to use them wisely. Kim Kelley-Wagner

Maybe your adoptive family could create a similar set of photos. We do not doubt that many people have said well-meaning, but ignorant statements about your mixed ethnicity family, special need, or decision to adopt. You may want to instictively cover your child's ears – or do you find a way to create a teachable moment? How do you show love to those who are misinformed?
