Urgent Need in India: The India Food Pantry

Our America World staff and partners in India have the opportunity to visit many orphanages throughout the country.  Recently, we were made aware of orphanages in India that are in desperate need of basic resources like formula and food for the children in their care. Unfortunately, malnourishment is a real concern in institutional care around the world. To add to the difficulties of providing food and formula for these children, this time of year is especially hot in India, so it’s even more critical that children are well-fed. Many babies suffer from a common nutrition absorbency disorder that does not allow their bodies to digest the food commonly provided to them.  Their health and weight deteriorate daily and this is truly a life or death situation, for which no solution is available within India.

In the United States, a special formula named Pregestimil is used routinely for infants with digestive disorders.  America World would like to send an emergency shipment of this formula to India for our in-country staff to distribute as soon as possible.  We have seen babies immediately responded to the Pregestimil with quickly improved health and weight gain.  This formula literally saves lives.

America World has decided to step in immediately and help provide for some of these needs regardless of whether the children are in an orphanage that we partner with for adoptions or not.  This immediate and life saving need will be addressed through the establishment of America World’s “India Food Pantry†Fund – a monetary fund devoted entirely to purchasing basic food, formula and clean drinking water for orphanages in crisis.  America World created a similar fund in Haiti which is successfully providing basic needs for kids in many, many orphanages.
