The Greatest Special Need: A Family Story & Advocacy

Earlier this year, the Harvey family met their son Bowen for the very first time. Although it’s only been 5 months, Bowen’s mother, Angie, shared that he has transitioned so well and that it feels like he has always been a part of their family. For families considering adoption of children with Down syndrome or other special needs, Angie reflects on their experience after bringing Bowen into their home:

“People with Down syndrome are more like us than different.  Bowen’s greatest special need was the fact that he needed a family. It’s evident by how much he has blossomed since joining our family.  He can do things just like our other children his age. He can bathe and dress, feed himself, and is potty-trained.”

While in China meeting Bowen, Chris & Angie met Bowen’s foster brother, who we are calling “Drake.”  They think about him often and their hearts are burdened by the fact that he is still in need of his forever family! Below is a photo of Bowen and Drake when they met them this year:

Drake is described as an adorable, active, happy child. He loves interacting with the other children in his facility and even will wake up the other children around him in the morning so they can start playing together. He is full of energy, loves listening to music, and watching the television. Drake can understand the nanny’s instructions, has a strong imitating ability, and can speak some words of the local dialect. He has a very good daily routine, eats well, and is loved by those who care for him. Everyone that knows Drake hopes that he will have a family soon to share his wonderful bright smiles with.
