Trust Based Relational Intervention (TBRI)® Training Videos
Many people in the adoption world have become familiar with Trust Based Relational Intervention (TBRI)®, and the associated “Empowered To Connect” organization, from the Karyn Purvis Institute of Child Development at Texas Christian University. If you are not familiar with it, here is a summary of what it is from their website:
TBRI® is an attachment-based, trauma-informed intervention that is designed to meet the complex needs of vulnerable children. TBRI® uses Empowering Principles to address physical needs, Connecting Principles for attachment needs, and Correcting Principles to disarm fear-based behaviors. While the intervention is based on years of attachment, sensory processing, and neuroscience research, the heartbeat of TBRI® is connection.
I was blessed to attend a week-long training with Dr. Purvis and her colleagues in 2011, and it changed my world: in my counseling practice, it changed my view of how people heal from hard things, and in my life as a parent, it changed the way I related to my children by birth and adoption. I am so grateful for the things I learned. As we wrapped up our last day there, they gave us set of videos that showcased many of the TBRI principles. They were like pure gold to me, and I left Fort Worth armed with the tools I needed to help families on a much deeper level. I have loaned these videos out to families over and over, and like a ragged old teddy bear, these tattered cases containing these DVDs are precious to me, and have been a source of insight and comfort to many.
The training videos are for sale on the Karyn Purvis Institute website, AND (what has prompted me to write this post), is the fact that you can now RENT these videos for less than $10. I am so excited about this new option. You can find an example of this rental option HERE. I really encourage you to explore these videos, and if you are struggling, rent or buy one and watch it! If you are part of a church adoption ministry, buy a set for your church library. If you have a friend who is adopting, buy one as a shower gift.
When you go on the site, you may be overwhelmed with options, but my favorite one is a broad but detailed overview called “Trust Based Parenting.” It is a 4-hour video that teaches about the principles and shows many real-life examples. I encourage you to check it out, and pray you find a “gem” there as well that bring insight and healing into your family! Reach out to me if you have questions at ACT@awaa.org.
