Orphans, Orphan Care & Adoption in 2019
As believers in Jesus, we all want to be more like Him. Between our jobs and our families and our friends and the groceries and the laundry, and lots of other things we don’t always make the time to live out specific callings in our lives.
What is truly important? How can I make a difference in my world? How can I be more like Him in 2019?
Jesus spoke quite a bit about those who are unable to care for themselves, specifically orphans and widows in James 1:27. He has called us to care for them.
Since America World Adoption’s mission statement is, “Building families according to God’s design of adoption and caring for vulnerable children around the world“, we wanted to share some insight with you into what we do & why.
Orphans
What is an orphan? The true definition of the word is, “a child deprived by death of one or usually both parents.” A single orphan is a child who has lost one parent and a double orphan is a child who has lost both parents.
UNICEF statistics include single and double orphans. UNICEF statistics state that there are 140 million orphans worldwide—15.1 million have lost both parents.
Suffice to say, there are lots of vulnerable children all over the world (including right here in the U.S.) who need to be cared for and loved; who need a mom & dad, and a family to call their own.
Orphan Care
Caring for orphans is such a very broad action. It is meeting the basic needs of food, clothing, shelter, medical care & love. It is making sure every vulnerable child, any child without a mother and/or a father or one that is not receiving basic care and protection, knows that they have value.
Orphan care can be simply advocating for children who are waiting to be adopted. America World shares specific children on our Blog and social media every week. Sharing those posts is a quick and easy way to truly make a difference to those children. Many of them find their forever families because of advocates.
Orphan care can be praying for vulnerable children. Praying for orphan care organizations, like America World, who are on the front lines. The enemy steals, kills, and destroys. We need God to intervene. Prayer changes things!
Orphan care can be setting aside a week or two out of our busy schedules to visit orphans in an orphanage. Holding them, praying for them, assuring them they are loved, valued, and that you are advocating for them, and simply loving on them, can make a tremendous impact on them!
Orphan care can be contributing financially to the ministry of America World as we care for orphans around the world.
Orphan care can also be adoption…
Adoption
Adoption is an important and necessary part of society. Adoption is central to the gospel in that God, through Jesus, adopted each of us as believers. The Bible is full of adoption stories and references. Even Jesus Himself was adopted by Joseph!
Every child deserves a family. That is the way God intended it and as His hand and His feet, we may be called to adopt a child who is waiting. If God is calling your family to adoption, America World would love to be a part of that amazing journey.
Go where you are called. Take a step of faith in caring for orphaned and vulnerable children. That is a great way to be like Him in 2019!
