China Waiting Child, “Matt”
Matt is a smart, delightful, bright-eyed little boy as noted in his file. Like all boys, he is active and loves to play with his friends. His file states that he is positive, has a good memory and is musically talented. He is in school Monday through Saturday, studying English, Chinese, Math, and Hu Lu Si (a Chinese instrument that he can play beautifully). He can remember the children’s songs and Tang Poems taught by the teacher each time and can also recite them for other classmates in his class. He is able to write simple characters, numbers, Pinyin, and letters in both English and Chinese. His teachers noted that he is actively engaged and does very well in his schoolwork, diligently completing homework and calculating numbers quickly.
Matt has been diagnosed with bilateral basal ganglia softening and though his pronunciation can sometimes be unclear, his diagnosis doesn’t appear to impact him in any other area. He likes drawing, reading, playing games with other children, and participating in sports (especially basketball). Staff shared that he gets along well with other children when playing and eats a wide variety of foods, including meat and seafood, vegetables, bread, cake, and fruits. Matt has good fine and gross motor skills as evidenced in his paperwork and is also able to care for himself independently.
