LABOR DAY:  CELEBRATING OUR WORK AS ADOPTIVE FAMILIES

Labor Day, noted by the U.S. Department of Labor to be “a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.”  America World would like to take a moment to thank you and celebrate with you—families and children alike—for the work you do every day to make the world a little better, relationships a little stronger, and families a little closer.

Aside from your normal jobs, the little things you choose to do each day bring strength, prosperity, and well-being to your family, such as washing that 7th load of laundry, working those extra hours to pay for physical therapy, getting that 10th drink of water for your child as she stalls bedtime, letting to dishes go to have time to play a game with your child, and so much more.  Getting deeper still, the work we do as adoptive families can include dealing with our own trauma histories, negative habits, and personal exhaustion, and our children from hard places work hard every day to learn new ways of living and responding.  All of this is work, and it is worth acknowledging and celebrating.  We know there are days when you feel like you make mistakes that take you two steps back from the progress you had made, and sometimes you can’t get one thing or room cleaned up without a little one right behind you messing up the next space, and maybe your labor feels in vain.  But take heart, because even on the hard days, the Lord sees your work, and He will reward it, as we know from Colossians 3:23-24: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”

So, Thank You!  Thank you for loving your children, healing the hurts, and doing the hard things.  Thank you for your work.  We hope that you can take some time to celebrate more than the beginning of fall and football, but really acknowledge and rejoice in the work God has set before you.
