Adoption Benefits in the Workplace
When we think of job benefits the first things that come to mind are health insurance, paid time off for vacation, and retirement. Did you know that some workplaces offer adoption benefits to their employees? These adoption benefits can be paid time off for adoption travel and even financial reimbursement for some adoption expenses. A survey showed that 56% of employers in 2015 provided some type of adoption benefit to their employees. That number is up from 12% in 1990 according to an article shared by our friends at the National Council for Adoption (NCFA).
Adoption-Friendly Benefits in the Workplace It is the Right Thing to Do , written by Rita Soronen, President, and CEO of the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption provides great insight for adoptive families. In the article, Rita shares that Dave Thomas, the founder of The Wendy’s Company and the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption was a big proponent of adoption benefits being offered by employers. Included in the article are how these benefits offer perks to the employer (not just the employee), and how to request adoption benefits at your workplace if they are not already provided.
Each year, the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption selects the Top 100 Adoption-Friendly Workplaces. Did your workplace make the list? If not, be sure to read the article for resources on suggesting your company consider these important benefits.
