In 2013, America World began a call-in support group for post adoption families with an emphasis on families who recently completed their adoptions. The group focuses on a different topic each month such as feeding or sleep issues, activities to foster attachment, and grief and loss in adoptive children. The group meets on the last Thursday of the month from 8-9:00 pm EST. Families have welcomed the opportunity to connect with other families having similar concerns. Sara Munyan, Post Adoption Director, is also available to talk to families individually if they have any concerns after their placement, and is available to help you locate resources in your local area.
Our Post Adoption department also hosted our first webinar this past year called “Becoming an Educational Advocate for Your Child” with Janie Hayslett. This online training offered excellent tips for parents on how to advocate for their child’s educational needs and is available for a small fee by emailing Sara Munyan.
Although being in the post adoption stage means you have completed the work of bringing your child home, this is where the journey truly begins. We serve as a resource for concerns or issues that come up, and plan to offer additional webinars and support in the coming year.
